Truth be told, Sicily holds a steady place in my life. It’s where I got married, where the light feels warmer, the air a little slower. And somehow, it reminds me of other places I love, like Andalusia and the Balearic Islands. There’s that same mix of wild beauty and quiet elegance.

And yet, on my first trip to Sicily, I missed Mount Etna entirely. I know… it still surprises me too.

When you think of Etna, it’s easy to picture the dramatic side of it all: the dark volcanic slopes, the hikes toward the summit, the almost lunar landscapes. Or maybe if you’re like me you think of the vineyards producing some of Sicily’s most exciting wines. But when we finally planned our return, one question stayed with us: where should we actually stay?

Because here’s the thing: what most people don’t realize is that the base for visiting Etna isn’t just a postcard of vineyards and lava fields. The reality is more layered, more spread out… and choosing the right place can quietly shape your whole experience.

While working on this guide, I noted a few stays that felt right for any Etna trip. I’ve grouped them by area, so you can choose the right area for you.

key takeaways

  • There’s no clear winner when it comes to which hotel has the best view of Mount Etna. My personnal favorite is Ramo d’Aria Etna Boutique Hotel.
  • The best place to stay when visiting Mount Etna is along the eastern slope of the volcano or in Taormina.
  • You can visit Mount Etna on your own, but it takes a fair amount of preparation, and you’ll be limited to certain areas of the volcano. Going with a guide is often the easier option.

Overview Region by Region

Taormina

First, there’s Taormina. It’s the kind of place people fall for right away.

If you’re looking for luxury, this is where you stay. It has that timeless feel (once a stop on the Grand Tour, now known to many through The White Lotus) and it’s still deeply romantic. The famous Teatro Antico di Taormina brings in the crowds, and yes, it can get busy. But there’s a reason people keep coming. It’s beautiful, refined, and incredibly easy to enjoy.

From here, visiting Mount Etna is simple, especially if you’re joining a guided tour. You’re also in a good spot to explore the vineyards on Etna’s northern slopes, while still having the sea just below. With easy access from Catania and Messina, it’s one of the most convenient bases on the island. It’s undeniably the most touristic option on this list. But if you’re dreaming of that big, romantic Sicilian stay, Taormina really delivers.

East of Etna

On the east side of Mount Etna, the landscape are less dramatic and more rural. There isn’t one main village of the east of Mount Etna that stands out. Instead, it’s a mix of small towns and countryside stays, where boutique hotels sit quietly between citrus groves and old stone walls.

It’s actually where we chose to stay when we visited Etna. If you stay near Giarre, you’ll also have access to the Circumetnea Railway, an old, charming train that circles the volcano. What I liked most was the balance. You’re right between the north (known for its vineyards) and the south, where most people go for trekking and those wide, open views of the volcano. It just made sense for us.

There are also many beautiful hotels in this area. And if you plan to hike Etna with a tour, most companies will pick you up here without extra fees. Just keep in mind, you’ll need a rental car to get around easily.

North of Etna

If you’re wine-obsessed and the lunar landscapes of Mount Etna aren’t really your thing, then the north side is for you. Yes, there are a few vineyards on the south side (very few), and a bit more on the east. But for every one you find there, there are twenty on the north. This is where they all are. You can still join Etna tours from this side, of course, but to be honest, the most dramatic views of the volcano are on the south.

On the Mountain

The main reason to stay high on the mountain is if you want a quiet retreat or to be really close to the volcano. Honestly, it’s my least favorite area (it’s wild and a bit isolated in the forest) but I can see why it would be perfect place to stay if Etna is in eruption or if you want to do several treks on the volcano. The hotel in this guide is just 7 km from the Funivia dell’Etna, so it will be very easy to reach the slopes.

The 12 Best Mount Etna Hotels

Villa Sant’Andrea, A Belmond Hotel (Taormina)

Many of my recommended hotels sit high above the coast, but this one rests right by the sea. Villa Sant’Andrea, A Belmond Hotel is a quiet villa overlooking the Ionian Sea, with just 68 rooms and a intimate feel that’s quite rare in Taormina. Once occupied during World War II, it now offers a private beach, simple elegance and definitely a lot of charm. Its sister property, Grand Hotel Timeo, sits above in the town centre and is just a short cable car ride away. Everywhere you look, the views feel almost unreal, especially from the main restaurant, where you can see Mount Etna rising in the distance.

It’s a peaceful haven, just fifteen minutes from the lovely historic town of Taormina.

Hotel Villa Ducale (Taormina)

Finely appointed rooms with a small, chic boutique feel, and views that are nothing short of postcard-perfect. Perched above Taormina, Hotel Villa Ducale offers wide, open views of Mount Etna, the sea, and the small villages set into the hills. From the infinity pool, you can easily take in both the coastline and the famous volcano.

The villa feels calm and away from the crowds, which is honestly a relief, but getting into town is still easy thanks to the hotel’s shuttle. Inside, the style is simple, warm, and full of charm. It’s the kind of place where the view alone makes the stay special.

Camporè Etna Wines and Resort (North of Mount Etna)

Rustic elegance wrapped in vineyards and silence. If the polished, modern hotels around Etna don’t quite move you, you might feel more at home at Camporè Etna Wines and Resort. This former farm has been transformed into a small hotel and restaurant where time seems to slow with the rhythm of the vines. It has just four charming rooms, two of which open onto private terraces with views of Mount Etna.

The setting is truly enchanting: a historic villa just outside Randazzo, with amazing wines, great food, and even the option to arrive by helicopter!

Etna Quota Mille Boutique Hotel (North of Mount Etna)

Maybe it’s the way it sits quietly at 960 metres, right at the foot of Mount Etna, surrounded by old lava flows and that wild northern landscape. Etna Quota Mille Boutique Hotel doesn’t try too hard to impress, and that’s part of its charm. It’s set in a restored 19th-century Sicilian farmhouse, with green gardens that soften the rugged volcanic setting. Everything feels well thought out, from the calm terraces to the pool, which opens onto wide views of the mountains and the Alcantara Valley. It’s a place to slow down, maybe with a glass of local wine after a day exploring Etna Nord or the nearby wineries.

Just one thing to keep in mind: it’s a bit remote, so not the best if you want to go in and out of Randazzo all day.

Etna Hotel Feudo Vagliasindi (North of Mount Etna)

Timeless and quietly majestic. That’s what defines Etna Hotel Feudo Vagliasindi. Set on a calm road just five minutes from the medieval village of Randazzo, this historic Art Nouveau villa feels a little apart from everything. The setting is hard not to adore: vineyards stretch in every direction, with Mount Etna in the distance, glowing softly at sunset. The grounds are beautiful, with a pool among the vines and a large terrace facing the volcano. Inside, the atmosphere matches the charm of an early twentieth-century noble home: simple, elegant, and full of character.

It is a bit remote, yes, but that’s part of what makes it special. If you’re looking for a quiet stay with some of the best views of Etna and the surrounding wineries, you’ll feel very well placed here.

Zash Country Boutique Hotel & Spa (East of Mount Etna)

The eastern slope of Mount Etna is one of the best places to explore the volcano and the surrounding area, all from the comfort of a luxury country hotel. Zash Country Boutique Hotel & Spa fits perfectly here.

Almost lost in the landscape, it sits in a large citrus grove between the volcano and the Ionian Sea. It’s hard to imagine a more picturesque setting. Almost suspended in time, the old mansion has been delicately restored, with its lava stone walls still intact. With only a handful of rooms, the most striking feature is the dining room, once a winery. From the pool, Etna rises quietly in the distance, while the gardens smell of orange trees.

Ramo d’Aria Etna Boutique Hotel (East of Mount Etna)

Ramo d’Aria Etna Boutique Hotel, located east of Mount Etna on the edge of Giarre, is a surprising little oasis in an otherwise typical Sicilian town.

The hotel is modern and beautifully designed, with comfortable rooms and a classic Italian atmosphere. Its swimming pool is cleverly positioned to offer stunning views of Mount Etna. Aperol spritz by the water have never been more enjoyable! Surrounded by nature and lemon trees, the location feels secluded, yet it’s only a 25-minute drive to Taormina, just over an hour to Mount Etna, and a short drive from Catania Airport. On clear days, the views from the rooms and pool are simply breathtaking.

Relais San Giuliano (East of Mount Etna)

Hidden in the quiet town of Viagrande, Relais San Giuliano is a former noble villa that was once a farm and a wine cellar, now restored with great care. You’ll likely be pleasantly surprised by how authentic it feels. This hotel has just the right touch of modern style. The atmosphere is calm and almost intimate, with beautiful gardens, a lovely infinity pool, and shared spaces that feel warm and welcoming, almost like your own Sicilian home. Just outside Catania, it offers a peaceful escape while staying well located: about 30 minutes from Mount Etna, the cable car, and the airport, and less than 45 minutes from Taormina.

With its wine cellar and restored winter garden, it’s a quietly elegant place, perfect if you want comfort, charm, and easy access to Eastern Sicily’s most iconic spots.

Criu Boutique Hotel (East of Mount Etna)

At the foot of Mount Etna, in the village of Nicolosi, Criu Boutique Hotel offers a more modern, intimate kind of stay. The design stands out immediately: Clean lines, bright and spacious rooms, and a thoughtful architecture that feels connected to the land. There’s a quiet, friendly atmosphere here. It definitely succeeds at being a small refuge after a day on the volcano. Its location is especially practical: just 20 minutes from the Etna starting points and about 25 minutes from Catania. The village itself is lively enough, with restaurants within walking distance. While reaching Taormina can take longer in traffic, for Etna exploration, it’s hard to beat.

Criu is a natural basecamp: simple, stylish, and perfectly placed for those drawn to the mountain

Monaci Delle Terre Nere (East of Mount Etna)

Monaci Delle Terre Nere feels like the kind of place you usually only see in high-end travel magazines. Set on the slopes of Mount Etna, this Relais & Châteaux property unfolds across a vast estate of vineyards and olive groves, where an abandoned villa has been transformed into a refined retreat. The setting is both wild and serene, with terraces that open to sweeping views of the volcano and the distant sea.

There’s a real sense of space here, and a quiet kind of luxury that blends naturally with the surroundings. You can sit with a book, hear Etna in the distance, and watch the light change over the landscape. Every detail feels thoughtful, from the pool to the historic buildings. If you ever end up here, just breathe, enjoy, and take in Etna not only as a place to visit, but as a presence.

Locanda Milia Etna (On Mount Etna)

High on the slopes of Mount Etna, surrounded by forest at nearly 1500 meters above sea level, Locanda Milia offers something rare: total immersion in nature.

The setting is striking, shaped by old lava flows and dense woods known as one of the last “green lungs” of the volcano. Here, the silence is deep, broken only by birdsong and the wind through the trees. The hotel itself blends modern comfort with this raw environment, creating an almost magical atmosphere. Just 15 minutes from Rifugio Sapienza, it’s perfectly located for hiking and exploring Etna up close.

Are There Any Nice Hotels with a View of Mount Etna?

There are quite a few hotels across eastern Sicily with views of the famous Mount Etna. It is a mountain, after all. In the list above, Ramo d’Aria, Zash, Feudo Vagliasindi, and Hotel Villa Ducale all offer beautiful views of the volcano.
